(Mounjaro® - tirzepatide)?

What is Tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. It's a once-weekly injectable drug that's available under two brand names: Zepbound® and Mounjaro®. Tirzepatide is unique in which it has two mechanisms of action on the body. Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Similar to Ozempic® and Wegovy®, it mimics the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone to help regulate blood sugar and appetite, but it also mimics the naturally occurring GIP hormone to increase your sensitivity to insulin.

 

What this means is that tirzepatide works on your digestive system in two different, but complementary ways, to regulate your sugar levels, digestion, and appetite.

Zepbound®

is specifically approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight. It is also approved for treating moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults with obesity.

Mounjaro®

is approved for managing type 2 diabetes but is also widely used off-label for weight loss.

How Does Zepbound® Help With Weight Loss?

When used in conjunction with a healthy diet and increased physical activity, Zepbound® has been shown to help patients lose an average of between 15% to 20.9% of their body weight over time. The medication works by:

  • Reducing appetite

  • Controlling cravings

  • Slowing gastric emptying

  • Improving insulin sensitivity


This comprehensive approach makes Zepbound® especially beneficial for individuals who have struggled with traditional diet and exercise alone.

Who is a Candidate for Zepbound®?

You may be a good candidate for Zepbound® treatment if:

  • Your BMI is 30 or higher, or

  • Your BMI is 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition (e.g., high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol)
     

If your BMI is under 27, you may still be a candidate to be prescribed Zepbound®, depending on your medical history, lab results, or previous use of the medications. At Phoenix NP, our licensed medical providers will assess your health history and goals to determine if Zepbound® or a similar treatment is right for you.

Who should not use Zepbound®?

  • Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2

  • Personal or family history of thyroid cancer

  • Personal history of Suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts

  • Personal history of Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Personal history of Pancreatitis or gall bladder issues

  • Currently pregnant or actively trying to get pregnant

  • Known serious hypersensitivity to tirzepatide or any of the excipients in Zepbound®

Common side effects

The most common side effects of Zepbound® include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach (abdominal) pain, indigestion, injection site reactions, feeling tired, allergic reactions, belching, hair loss, and heartburn. These are not all the possible side effects of Zepbound®.
